National day celebrations always make me want to cry. But then, so do a lot of other things. I don't know whay i'm so weepy these day; maybe it's the effect of the maths. Wonder what Freud would have to say about it.

After reading Michael's entry......... well- im a cynic. That's because i treasure -proper- culture- somethign more genuine, something not manufactured. No doubt there is a sense of rootedness, and loyalty to the place, a- la Rolly's example of 'char kway teow' ["to us brits, it's just like... i durnno... a plateful of pure cholestrol"] Well, i don't know. One thing about Singapore that annoys me to death is the propensity for simplification. We're fed all these silly ideas about ourselves, and every 9 aug we get the annual reminder that we are only a herd. Incidentally, our Emperor is starting to look more and more like Yoda. I don't mean to be derisive, and i definitely agree with Michael on most points, but what would make me a dispossessed petit bourgeois would be the scathing realpolitik. This is not to say that idealism is best, but i do believe that a nation needs something beyond jingoism.

But i will change all that if they giev me the money for the street art. haha.....
